Yuppie is an acronym for "Young Urban Professional". It is a term that's often used to describe a certain demographic pejoratively, with connotations of selfishness, materialism, and superficiality. Originally the term held some positive meaning, but quickly led to backlash against those that self-identified with the term. The phrase "Die Yuppie Scum" quickly entered the public eye, particularly on bumper stickers. The general media was something at a loss to explain the backlash, and several evening news programs attempted to delve into the matter without much success.
The writer Alice Kahn coined the word "YUPS" in an article that first appeared in the East Bay Express in 1982 (weeks later, The Chicago Reader reprinted it, and given its 200,000+ circulation was often credited with publishing it first)[citation needed]. Kahn depicted a new generation of San Francisco commuters who began to take over the historically ethnic suburban neighborhoods of Oakland and Berkeley, detailing their food choices, consumption habits, and general lifestyle. |
